ABOUT THE MONTCLAIR STATE PRSSA CHAPTER
Founded in 2008 by Larry Weiner the Montclair State PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) is a professional student organization. It is based off of its parent organization, the PRSA, the world’s largest organization for public relations professionals. Its goal is to provide hands on Public Relations experience to its members through actual clients, and to help students build a professional network. In this PRSSA chapter there are about 24 members, half that are considered active members. The executive board of the organization consists of president Melissa Torres, vice president Cynthia Huasipoma, public relations director Jessica Ortega, secretary Sabrina Aurallo, treasurer Josh Oksman, and historian Elizabeth DeLaCruz.
A few accomplishments of Montclair State’s PRSSA include winning the 2006 United States Postal Service Executive Public Relations Challenge competition, performing public relations for 2006 and 2007 Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year, Lorena Ochoa, the fifth and ninth annual Andy Kaufman Awards, Hackensack University Medical Cancer Center, and Autism NJ.
In an academic year, which consists of fall and spring semester, PRSSA members host workshops and seminars for its members. Public relations professionals from agencies such as The Gersh Agency and many others run these events. In addition, its members are invited to three to four networking events also held by Public Relations agencies like BWW and Stern Strategy Group. In order to give back to the community the PRSSA hosts an annual entertainment event, with proceeds going directly to the Autism NJ a statewide non-profit organization.
